Biographical Information for Katia Olivova:
Katia Pflipsen Olivova is a third generation glass and jewelry artist, originally from the Czech Republic. Growing up in a family of artists, art and design have always been a major part of her life. Katia studied glass painting and design at the Secondary School of Glassmaking in Kamenicky Senov followed by two years of jewelry design study in Jablonec nad Nisou. In 2006 Katia moved with her glass artist husband, Steve Pflipsen, to the US to continue to develop her work. Through years of experimentation with different materials, she has created a unique metal working technique using silver wire and tin alloys to realize her designs.
Katia is inspired by the vast complexity of natural structures and elegance that surrounds us. Since moving to Sitka, Alaska, she has found fresh inspiration in forest and oceanic life. Along with influence from historical architectural designs and classical ornamental styles, Katia creates unique pieces that reflect the whimsy and fanciful design of the world around us.
Recently, Katia began sharing her knowledge by teaching her technique and design. She also continues to expand the scope of her work through experimentation and continually finding new inspiration exploring the beauty that surrounds her.
